It’s beginning to look a lot like…

December is here are we are ready to end the year in style. Our trees are up, decorations adorn the hotel and there is a real festive buzz in Lymington. Our Christmas afternoon tea looks pretty as a picture and Head Chef Ben has recently launched new Winter Menus in Burcher and Co as well as the Bistro.

Not that we evunnamed-1er need an excuse to raise a glass to the festive season but we are very excited to announce our new ’12 Gins of Christmas’ menu. Available at the bar each of our 12 Gins are expertly paired with a different tonic and garnish. From a classic Hendricks with a slice of cucumber, infamous Monkey 47 or the unique Silent Pool there is a Gin for every taste! If Gin isn’t your thing perhaps we can tempt you with a cocktail from our new Christmas menu, Rocking Rudolph or Santa’s Fizz anyone?

No January blues allowed here, we add a little spice to the start of the year and are delighted to announce another Gourmet Curry Evening. After the success of our Autumn dinner we invite back award winning curry chef Indunil Sanchi to take over the kitchen for one night only on January 25th.

2017 also sees the start of our ‘World of Wine’ series. Max from Priory Wines has teamed up with Head Chef Ben to take you on a gastronomic journey across the globe. Expect the unexpected as they discover hidden wine gems from near and far. From the golden vineyards of California,   a sparkling summer in the south of France or a punchy red from Argentina each dinner will give you an insight into a region of choice. Hosted by wine connoisseur Max and our award winning chef Ben Johnson we look forward to taking you around the world from the comfort of our restaurant. 

Thank you to all our friends, followers and guests who have made this year a memorable one at Stanwell House, we have enjoyed summer BBQ’s in TEN, some wonderful weddings and parties, our biggest every Lymington charity ball. Whether a Christmas cocktail, festive party of a cosy coffee in Burcher we hope to see you this December.

The best of Autumn..

Here at Stanwell House we are loving all that Autumn brings to this time of the year. The season to embrace coffee, cashmere, changing leaves, cosying up inside, Sunday roasts and warming log fires to name a few!

downloadThe forest is looking so beautiful at the moment, acorns falling, golden leaves, ponies and pigs roaming and crisp cold days. Perfect for a stroll in the sunshine followed by a visit to Stanwell House. Our popular summer BBQ’s have been replaced by Head Chef Ben’s infamous Sunday Roast Menu, served in the conservatory and Burcher and Co every Sunday afternoon. Live Jazz every other week and a brand new wine list mean you are in for an end of week treat! Afternoon Teas are as popular as ever and we can’t wait to show your pictures of our festive Afternoon Tea, sweet treats with a Christmas twist throughout December.

This week we are gearing up for Halloween with pumpkin carving and ghoulish cocktails followed by our monthly wine dinner tomorrow evening. Christmas is filling up thick and fast and the team are getting ready for a busy month of Christmas parties and celebrations, followed by a sparkling New Year’s Eve dinner to start 2017 in style. Our hotel manager Lewis is finishing the final touches to our 12 days of Gin Christmas menu (hurrah!) which we look forward to sharing with you. An array of unique gins each expertly paired with a different tonic and garnish- cheers to that!

We hope to see you in November for a coffee or cocktail at the bar or to try our new menus at Burcher & Co, with the majority of our products sourced locally we are proud of  show off the best of the Forest in the heart of Lymington.

Inspired by the excitement of this week’s end of Great British Bake Off our pastry team have been trying out new bakes for our morning coffee and cakes, as overheard in the conservatory “This Chocolate Fudge Brownie cake is melt in the mouth delicious! Autumn really is the perfect season for cosying up with coffee and cake!”

Long hazy summer days…

As we head into the long holiday month of August we can see changes on the High Street from our ideally positioned coffee (or rosé) window. The mood is more relaxed, there is a lot less hustle and bustle, the pace has in fact, slowed right down and there are fewer locals passing by, plus there is less hooting when the odd inevitable parking tussle occurs!

Being located slap bang in the centre of the High Street in this attractive New Forest town, means we have a constant flow of coffee drinkers, ladies who lunch, families with their dogs and friends gathering to enjoy the recently launched new Burcher & Co and Bistro menus fom Head Chef Ben Johnson.

Our secluded walled garden has been full of people enjoying the lunchtime BBQ and the glorious sunlight from the South facing aspect. It may be slow outside but behind the scenes we really are absolutely flat out!

IMG_2822Our ‘front of house team’ is being kept on their toes with bookings for the Christmas & New Year offer. Dates for the ever popular Stanwell House Christmas parties are filling thick and fast for the upcoming 2016 party season.

We have always hosted sailing parties here, have I mentioned that Sir Ben Ainslie used to stay with us #curtsy, and this year has been no exception. Our partnership with Henri Lloyd has meant these guests have priority access to all the sailing gear they need at a discounted rate and for our guests preferring to keep their feet dry they can also take advantage of our preferential rate in the Lymington store just metres away with many different clothing options on offer.

Overheard in the conservatory, a couple fervently discussing properties in the area. “Why did you get those particulars? You only like it because it has a huge man shed. I’d never see you … Oh no, wait. Let me look at that one again. Drink darling?”

TEN in the Garden Summer 2016

From the coffee window we have seen bunting to celebrate the Queen’s 90th and posters for summer fetes at the local villages and schools popping up all over the place. We’ve spotted a gentleman on a horse bearing flags and the large yellow dog on a trailer caused some coffee spillage as it made its way along the steep High Street.

Stanwell_Wedding-6TEN is the jewel in our crown here at Stanwell House. The attractive wooden pavilion is situated in our beautiful walled garden to the rear of the property and is so secluded that even guests who stay with us every year are unaware of its existence until its pointed out!

Small, but perfectly formed and accessed by discreet steps from our patio, TEN holds its own wedding license and has played host to numerous ‘big days’ and watched many happy couples declare ‘I do!’ over the last two years. It has proved so popular with wedding parties that we have served afternoon tea to the bride and her family ahead of the wedding day and then brunch the following morning as the dust settles.

Because it is so well hidden TEN has an air of exclusivity about it and works well for anyone looking for an intimate venue for private dining to celebrate a milestone birthday, an engagement or even a corporate celebration. With it’s own chef and waiting team, drinks fridge, heater and television you really can be assured of as much privacy as desire.

Overhead in reception a lady whispering to our receptionist Marilyn, “Is it too soon to book in for Christmas?”

Summer Sizzler

The coffee window is offering us plenty to ponder on … The weather is playing havoc with people being able to gauge the sudden climactic change from hot, hot sunshine to a sharp northerly breeze and either sighing and carrying their coats, or desperately looking for more layers to sling on!

 16_March_Stanwell_House-21iJune marks the opening of BBQ season here at Stanwell House. Even people that have lived in the town for years, and guests that return time after time, are often unaware of the delights our pretty walled garden holds. It is open to everyone, not just our residents, so do feel free to come and wonder down and have a peek at what the garden has to offer. Just walk through the conservatory, out of the door at the far end and up the steps and keep going!

 You will find a beautiful South facing walled garden holding 8 tables of four. The BBQ has a dedicated chef and waitress on hand to look after those taking time out to relax and enjoy lunch in the warmer weather.

 Obviously we’re a tad rain dependent and will open on days where the forecast is looking favourable for wall-to-wall blue skies and sunshine, however you can nip in to Burcher & Co if things turn inclement!

 The opening hours will be:

 12:00 – 15:00                       Wednesday – Friday

12:00 – 18:00                       Saturday – Sunday

 The blackboard on the High Street will indicate the ‘status’ of weather play.

‘May Day’ from the coffee window…

Well, the man spotted wearing the shorts a couple of weeks ago is pushing through with them all the way to summer as far as we can make out, despite the cutting breeze bowling down Lymington High Street!

May is a busy month for us here at as the first ‘summer’ Bank Holiday Weekend sees the official opening of our large garden. People often mistake the pretty patio area located just outside the conservatory as our only outdoor area, but if you take the steps at the back, you’ll find one of the gleaming jewels in our crown… Twinkly trees, oh so comfortable chairs and the lawn area faces due South so on a sunny day, there is nowhere quite like it in the centre of town. It’s a truly perfect stop for lunch with friends or ‘an after work’ get together with colleagues.

We hosted our first private BBQ in “TEN” our garden pavilion last weekend, comments coming from the pavilion were, OMG we love it, what else can we arrange to celebrate in TEN! We have many, many more functions and weddings booked for TEN in the diary. The weather just about played ball, but as the pavilion is fully heated it really doesn’t matter!

PrintThis May also heralds our 9th anniversary at Stanwell House! Yes 9 years and it has flashed past. In celebration of this landmark, our collaboration with British marine and lifestyle apparel brand Henri Lloyd goes LIVE! There are discount offers available for all hotel overnight guests in the Lymington store, all sorts of competitions and if you are coming to stay with us for a sailing specific event, let us know as we may just be able to help you with your crew kit!

 There are plans afoot inside the hotel with more investment being rolled out and we have a fairly mighty schedule of works coming up in the next few months. It’s exciting to have mood boards and paint samples on the desk and we can’t wait to unveil our latest project to you.

There is no doubt that spring is making its presence felt here in Lymington. The April showers seem to bring with them an air of congeniality as we view people alternately grin and grimace as they deal with bursts of sunshine, followed by an absolute drenching on the High Street! Our ‘coffee window’ is also experiencing something of a seasonal influence with glasses of rose and a ‘cheeky’ prosecco becoming more popular as the evenings lengthen and friends begin to gather after work.

Talking of fizz, excitement is rising (like bubbles in a glass, I know!) about the Jacquart Champagne Dinner on Friday 13th May we are hosting. HeadChef Ben Johnson has created a menu to sit alongside the 5 champagnes that will accompany each dish including Duck Pie with Raspberry Caviar, Lymington Crab Risotto with Samphire and Bramshaw Pork. ‘From the Coffee Window’

There have been some great weather moments on view from the coffee window recently, in particular that old favourite the ‘inside out umbrella’. We’ve all been there, but it does still make us grin!

One up and coming event that even the rain can’t dampen is the Lymington Charity Ball, formerly the Lymington Carnival Ball. We are delighted to be hosting this community event here again this summer on 9th July having run it for the last 3 years. It’s always great to bring people together to celebrate all that is good about our town while raising money that will directly benefit inhabitants of all ages.

IMG_0941We are working closely with the event organiser Mish Frampton who is an avid supporter of the local charities who will benefit from the fundraising.

 “Most people in Lymington know someone who has had care from Oakhaven Hospice and living by sea, the 9th Lymington Sea Scouts is a great youth organisation that always needs funding. The third charity is the Lymington Sports Association (LSA) which is a new organisation with a goal of improving sport in the town.” Mish Frampton

 Our Award Winning, 2 Rosette Chef Head Chef Ben Johnson always incorporates the theme of the Ball into his menu and this year is no exception. Ben has worked Lobster Cappucino, Duck with New Forest Rhubard, Martini Caviar and a dessert entitled ‘GOLD’ into the ‘007’ theme and we are certain that all these dishes will be ‘Licensed to Thrill’.

Stanwell House has a spring in its step!

solent-wayb-1The coffee window has been busy over the last few weeks, the recent blast of sunshine giving those in what we call ‘pole position’ plenty to remark on regarding parking, items acquired at the Saturday market and trying to differentiate locals from visitors (good game, good game!). There was also a shout of “shorts…” earlier this week and we think that may have been the first sighting for Spring 2016 on our pretty Georgian High Street!

 Oddly, shorts and other items of clothing have been on the agenda behind the scenes at Stanwell House. We are delighted to be entering an exciting collaboration with British marine and lifestyle apparel brand Henri Lloyd. More news and information about the benefits to our guests will be released over the coming weeks so please keep your eyes peeled on our various social media platforms as we want you to be the first to know what’s coming.

 Our grounds are beginning to spring into life (see what I did there J) and TEN is already looking busy over the summer months. For those of you not in the know, TEN is our exclusive garden pavilion located to the rear of the hotel in a secluded wall garden. Seating 10 guests for private dining, vintage afternoon tea, corporate meetings and product launches, TEN is also a perfect backdrop to anyone looking for an outdoor wedding or christening experience, and with its own chef and BBQ Grill is ideal for anyone looking for a discreet, yet luxurious venue.

 With Easter being so early this year, Sunday 27th March, and with Mothers Day to celebrate on 6th, Head Chef Ben Johnson has sourced and designed beautiful menus using the absolutely best local produce available. Ben is also working on something a little special for the Lymington Charity Ball that we are delighted to be hosting this summer!

 With the British Tapas in Burcher & Co continuing to go down a storm with you all, Ben has decided to add some fresh new seasonal variations, the refreshed menu will be available shortly and we look forward, as ever, to your feedback.

 Overheard at reception…. “It just seems wrong to be leaving so soon.” “Why, we’ve had a lovely time and we need to collect the children from my mother?” This was followed by a huge sigh and, “I know, but there are so many cocktails I still need to try!”

‘Festive 12’

During December we shared Thierry’s Festive 12 on our social media platforms. These are wines he has selected from our list to go with your meal and some just for quaffing! From recent scenes through our coffee window, some revellers have also shared Festive 13, 14 & 15, perhaps higher in some cases. All in all, it’s been a very merry High Street one way or another!

Thierry is very passionate about his wine and can spend hours researching and sourcing exciting new vintages, bin end reds and sublime whites once he has gone through the menus with our Head Chef Ben Johnson to see what is coming up for the new season.

Because the Festive 12 were so well received (Thierry is thrilled) we thought we’d put all the ‘deets’ here for you. We’ll keep it brief, just enough information for you know what’s coming at you from the glass. If you are out with friends in Lymington, dining or staying with us you’ll be able to identify the ones that tickle your festive fancy and find them on the list. If you see Thierry – he usually has at least a bottle in each hand – please do pick his brains if you’d like to know anything further!

We’ll start with the ‘merry and bright’ whites;

Urla Sauvignon Blanc 2014 £33

Great vintage, bursting with white florals, fresh herbs and stone fruits, hints of gooseberry, rich and succulent on the palate.

Rioja Blanca, Vina Cerrada 2013 £22

100% Viura grape from the Rioja region this is a dry fruit forward style of wine that combines citrus, pineapple and white fruit. Perfect with seafood, particularly scallops.

Picpoul De Pinet Roquemoliere £24

The perfect seasonal antidote! It’s zesty, fresh, mouth-tinglingly (I know its not a word, but…) lively and packed with bright green apple and lemon flavours, a hint of tangy fennel and herbs. For those days when you are taking a break from the meat!

 Gavi di Gavi Ascheri Italie £33

Another exceptional wine from Matteo Ascheri – he can do no wrong! Flint and stone on the nose with a hint of line and greengage. It explodes in the mouth with tangy fruit held in place with underlying acidity and a perfect choice with sea bass and sole.

Gewurztraminer Trimbach 2012 £36

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! Full balanced and wonderfully aromatic, dry, exotic and spicy. Lots of lychee, rose, ginger and a brilliant accompaniment to our British Tapas in Burcher & Co!

 

Move on to the warming ‘fireside’ reds;

Lote 44 Malbec Quarto Domino £24

Deep black cherry in colour with vanilla and mocha aromas and full rich mouthful that goes down a storm with red meat such as roast beef, steak and prime rib.

Cotes du Rhone 2013 Domaine de la Janasse £28

Intense aromas of black cherry, Moroccan spice and leather give you an immediate and robust burst on the palate with fine rich tannins, layers of white pepper and kirsch. Lovely with venison!

Blue Eye Boy Shiraz 2014 £55

And coincidentally the big boy of our wine list! I know it’s a pricey option however it is Christmas and this wine is sublime, by far the best Shiraz I have ever tasted. A bouquet of deep blueberry, rich plum and coffee are chased up with chocolate, lustrous liquorice spice and creamy vanilla. It’s ripe, indulgent and a real experience.

Ladies who shoot their lunch Shiraz £45

Yes that really is its name… It has a vibrant violet colour, intense spice and mineral laced black and blue fruit aromas. Juicy on the palate with oodles of cassis and boysenberry flavours that get sweeter with aeration. It finishes with a smoky quality and a hint of dusty tannins. Great with game, obviously!

Les Tourelles de Longueville, Pauillac 2009 £69

Sumptuous, deep purple-red pronounced blackberry on the palate. This spectacular wine is an absolute joy and will go with anything you have on Christmas Day – anything!

 Cabernet Sauvignon Long Meadow Ranch 2010 £49

The nose has hints of blackberries, the briar patch, cedar and hint of smoky black tea. Well structured on the palate and refreshingly generous with additional flavours of dried plums, cherry and cola. Slick and smooth, a lot like Thierry!

 

And we’ll go out with a bang;

Ruinart Blanc de Blanc NV £85.00

Christmas and New Year wouldn’t the same with out the odd class of fizzy and this one is the jewel in our crown! This is suave, delicately balanced and deliberately seductive 100% Premier Cru Chardonnay is pale yellow with beautiful luminosity and striking palate of apricot, cherry and plum #winner
